چکیده

In this letter we propose a facial feature extraction technique which utilizes polynomial coefficients derived from 2D Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients obtained from horizontally and vertically neighbouring blocks. Face authentication results on the VidTIMIT database suggest that the proposed feature set is superior (in terms of robustness to illumination changes and discrimination ability) to features extracted using four popular methods: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), PCA with histogram equalization pre-processing, 2D DCT and 2D Gabor wavelets; the results also suggest that histogram equalization pre-processing increases the error rate and offers no help against illumination changes. Moreover, the proposed feature set is over 80 times faster to compute than features based on Gabor wavelets. Further experiments on the Weizmann database also show that the proposed approach is more robust than 2D Gabor wavelets and 2D DCT coefficients. 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Implementation of a New Methodology to Reduce the Effects of Changes of Illumination in Face Recognition-based Authentication

In this paper, the study of the effects of illumination changes in the process of face recognition is discussed. Additionally, a new methodology that integrates Single-Scale Retinex (SSR) and Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is presented. The proposed methodology addresses the problem of illumination changes in face recognition-based authentication systems. To do this, the SSR transform...

Face Processing & Frontal Face Verification

In this report we first review important publications in the field of face recognition; geometric features, templates, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), pseudo-2D Hidden Markov Models, Elastic Graph Matching, as well as other points are covered; important issues, such as the effects of an illumination direction change and the use of different face areas, are also covered. A new feature set (t...

Face Recognition: the Problem of Compensating for Changes in Illumination Direction

A face recognition system must recognize a face from a novel image despite the variations between images of the same face. A common approach to overcoming image variations because of changes in the illumination conditions is to use image representations that are relatively insensitive to these variations. Examples of such representations are edge maps, image intensity derivatives, and images co...

Illumination effects in face recognition

How do observers recognize faces despite dramatic image variations that arise from changes in illumination? This paper examines 1) whether face recognition is sensitive to illumination direction, and 2) whether cast shadows improve performance by providing information about illumination, or hinder performance by introducing spurious edges. In Experiment 1, observers judged whether 2 sequentiall...

Gradient Edge Map Features for Frontal Face Recognition under Extreme Illumination Changes

The aim of this work is to match images of frontal faces across extreme illumination changes. This is a problem of importance in a broad range of practical scenarios. For example, the user is commonly asked to face the camera in security applications which perform authentication before granting access to a resource. Retrieval systems also often focus on nearly frontal faces because face detecti...
